Cab hailing service is working to expand to Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana this year, days after it announced it was expanding to Mombasa, it’s second city in Kenya and Abuja and Port Harcout in Nigeria, its’ major expansion outside Lagos, the capital city.
“U.S.-based Uber plans to expand in Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana this year and will focus on convincing traditional taxi drivers to work for the ride-hailing service” Reuters reported.
Reuters added “the firm will set up East and West Africa “hubs” in Nairobi and Lagos to act as launchpads for forays into Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana, and would begin operating in a second city each in Nigeria and Kenya.”
Uber has also learnt something, it will engage metered taxi service operators early on than ignoring to ease friction with traditional taxi drivers.
In Kenya, Uber has started celebrating its driver-partners who have remained couragoiusly committed to the firm even with the recent attackes from traditional taxi drivers who said Uber was a threat to their livelyhoods.
Uber is now available in over 400 cities across 70 countries and spanning 6 continents, the expansion in Africa takes it head to head with Rocket Internet’s Easy Taxi which has launched in most of these countries. While the firm is gearing to launch in Mombasa and Abuja, Easy Taxi launched in this towns months ago.
